This tutorial is best for for photos taken with digital camera. Load your photo in PSP.
Make 2 copies of background layer. Name them Layer 1 and Layer 2. Turn off visibility for Layer 2 and select Layer 1 to work with.
Go to menu Adjust>Brightness and Contrast>Levels. Push the sliders to the right to get the dark image. Here are settings that I have used:

Now set the blending mode for Layer 1 to Hard Light and set its opacity to about 80. Turn on the visibility for Layer 2and select it for editing. Go to menu Adjust>Brightness and Contrast>Levels. This time push the slider to the left to get the bright image. Here are setting that I have used:

Set the blending mode for Layer 2 to Hard Light and its opacity to about 80 and that is it. Experiment more with blending modes and percent of opacity for better results.



































The original looked a lot better
This is a lot like multi-exposure photography . . . but with one picture. You’re a lot better off taking multiple pictures with different exposures and then combining them, that way the final result doesn’t look uh . . . bad.
I think that the end result is over-contrasted. I like HDR and everything, but you might want to tone it down a bit
